History of mosaics

The archeological history of the Villa Laurus is identical to the history of the mosaics.
 
It began in 1836 : while ploughing, a mosaic was hit and M Alquié, superintendant of the Marquis of Forbin, started the excavations.

Dares and Entelle mosaic

Mural mosaic representing the fight between Daries and Entelle, second century AC, almost entirely preserved.

The only mosaic with this mythical theme inspired by the Eneid of Virgil.

Diane and Callisto mosaic

Mosaic on a floor : 9 ft x 8 ft, second century AC representing Diana and Callisto with hunting scenes.

The theme is from Ovid’s  Metamorphosis.

Fifth mosaic

The fifth mosaic was found in 2006 by INRAP specialists.

It is about 5 feet wide and was located in the residential section of the villa.

Roman Villa

The Roman agricultural domain covered about 5000 m2 (54 000 ft3).
The residential section is caracterized by the quality of its floors and walls (mosaics, paintings). It has also 2 basins (one 70 feet long) with a fountain.

From March 30th till September 12th, 2016 to the museum Getty, in the district from Malibu to Los Angeles, a big exhibition on the Roman art of the Mediterranean region is organized.
